This Friday may turn out to be an important day for Punjabi cinema. For not only will it witness a Punjabi film grabbing maximum shows in various multiplexes, but will also mark the debut of veteran actor Kabir Bedi in the genre. Starring Harbhajan Maan,Tulip Joshi,Gurpreet Ghuggi and Bedi, the Ksshitij Chaudhary directed Yaara O Dildaara will be released worldwide simultaneously. The film has already booked a nember of shows in New Zealand,a relatively new territory for Punjabi cinema. The first show is already sold out in Amritsar, said Maan, eager to make headlines with this family drama. Touring all over Punjab, the cast and crew of the film were in town for a premiere show at PVR,Centra Mall.
With this film,Maan says, that he is testing the waters to know if Punjab still wants to see family dramas. Its like doing my first film. I am taking a risk here for I have done a film after two years, he says. While he refuses to give away the plot,Bedi, who plays the head of the family, shares the theme. The key conflict in the film is about difference of opinion and principals, he said.
Family ties aside, its Bedis better half, his current partner, who garnered quite some attention at the promotion. England-based Parveen Dusanj, who accompanied him, shied away from all our questions. Kabir should be answering all of them, smiled the leggy lass as she swept back her curly mop of hair. Dressed in a black top and jeans,Dusanj nodded her head in agreement as Bedi talked about his 30-year-long career, his extensive body of work in Europe and America, being knighted as Cavalier in Italy, and how he would love to do one Punjabi film a year. I am here to renew my ties with Punjab and its cinema. I want to be part of the change that is being witnessed by the Punjabi cinema. There has been a massive change in the kind of audience that watches Punjabi films and now is the time to raise the bar, said Bedi.
Bedi and Dusanj have also come up with a new production house titled Pivotal Movies. The first film under the new banner titled The Final Promise, will release early next year. A story about reincarnation, according to Dusanj,It will be an epic of a film, she said. A social worker with the UN before she met Bedi,Dusanj is now,as she says, his better half and is working with him.
After working in Yaara O Dildaara,Bedi says that he wants to explore Punjabi cinema. I would love to produce historical films and a science fiction in Punjabi, says Bedi, who is still craving for a solid recognition from Bollywood. Its overseas that I have attained fame, but I still introduce myself as an actor from Bollywood for thats where I started, said Bedi, who will be seen in Hindi films Alert and Showman soon. As for talks doing rounds regarding Deepa Mehtas Komagata Maru,Bedi said that these are mere speculations and Mehta hasnt had any talks with him yet.
