Meerut Lok Sabha Constituency, situated in the state of Uttar Pradesh, covers parts of Meerut and Hapur districts. It is one of the 80 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state. Meerut, known for its vibrant markets, is Asia’s number one bullion trading center. The constituency’s population, as per 2011 data, is approximately 3.5 million, with 65% Hindus and 36% Muslims.
In the 2019 general elections, the incumbent Rajendra Agarwal from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured victory with 586,184 votes (48.00% vote share), defeating Haji Mohammad Yaqoob of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). In the 2014 elections, Rajendra Agarwal also emerged victorious, obtaining 532,981 votes (47.86% vote share) against BSP candidate Mohammad Shahid Akhlak.
Arun Govil, BJP
Arun Govil, 66, replaced three-time MP Rajendra Agarwal who has been holding the Meerut seat since 2004. Thanking PM Narendra Modi, Govil took to X and penned a note. “Heartfelt gratitude to Shri Narendra Modi ji and the selection committee who have given me such a big responsibility by making me the MP candidate of Meerut. I will make every effort to fully live up to the trust of the BJP and the expectations of the people. Jai Shri Ram,” he wrote in Hindi.
Sunita Verma, SP
After securing the Meerut seat in the seat-sharing deal with Congress as a part of I.N.D.I.A. alliance, SP has looked a little confused about whom to field as their Lok Sabha candidate. They announced the names of Atul Pradhan and Bhanu Pratap Singh before settling down with the name of former Meerut Mayor Sunita Verma. While candidates of BJP and BSP will be having their first shot at Meerut politics, Sunita Verma will have a little edge in terms of experience in the city, which significantly increases SP’s chances of securing the win in Meerut.
Devvrat Tyagi, BSP
BSP candidate Devvrat Tyagi has filed nomination papers from the Meerut Lok Sabha seat. However, during this time, he made a scathing attack on the BJP candidate, calling him a gimmick Ram.
After the nomination, Devvrat Tyagi expressed confidence in his victory and said that only the Dalit-Muslim equation would take him to the Lok Sabha. At the same time, he also took a dig at BJP candidate Arun Govil. He said that the BJP candidate is Ram of drama. Arun Govil has nothing to do with Lord Ram. He has definitely worked in some films.
