Karnataka polls: EC directs Karnataka, neighbouring states to enhance vigil at inter-state check-posts

The CEC took note of the fact that seizures of illicit cash, liquor, drugs and freebies had increased from Rs 83 crore in 2018 to Rs 305 crore so far in this election season.

The Election Commission Monday directed officials in Karnataka and its neighbouring states to enhance the vigil at 185 inter-state check-posts to prevent illegal cash, liquor and drugs from entering the poll-bound state.

The EC held a video conference with the chief secretaries, director generals of police and other officers of Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala to review the election preparations in Karnataka and the law and order situation in the state and its neighbours.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar asked the officials to step up the vigil at the 185 check-posts, an EC statement said. The CEC took note of the fact that seizures of illicit cash, liquor, drugs and freebies had increased from Rs 83 crore in 2018 to Rs 305 crore so far in this election season.

“CEC asked to fix responsibility of local officers failing to control money power,” the EC statement said.

Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey asked the officers to take action against “anti-social elements” ahead of the May 10 polls. Election Commissioner Arun Goel emphasised that the tightening of the vigilance should not be an inconvenience to the public.
