J&K assembly election 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing an election rally in Katra urged the people to vote for BJP to end the dynastic politics of Congress, National Congress (NC), and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stressing that this election is about shaping Jammu and Kashmir’s future. “BJP is committed to the multi-sectorial development of Jammu, which was ignored by Congress, NC, and PDP for years,” he said.

He assured the crowd of his government’s focus on generating local employment, stating, “It’s my pledge that the new generation will not suffer under the rule of three families.” Referring to the positive changes since 2019, PM Modi remarked, “All schools and colleges in J&K are now functioning normally. Youths are carrying pens, not stones. Instead of hearing news of schools being burned, we now hear about the construction of AIIMS, IITs, and other infrastructure.”

He encouraged the public to break previous voting records in the second phase of the elections, scheduled for September 25.  The remaining phases of the elections will take place on September 25 and October 1, with vote counting scheduled for October 8.

Ongoing Assembly polls about choosing future of J&K: PM Modi

Asking people to cast their votes wisely in the ongoing Assembly polls that are linked to the "future of Jammu and Kashmir", Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said they should ensure the political sunset of the Congress, NC, and PDP, which have "inflicted wounds" in the region for years together.

Addressing a poll rally in Katra, the base camp for the pilgrims visiting the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district, Modi also accused the Congress leadership of insulting Hindu gods and goddesses under a "well-thought-out conspiracy" and due to a "Naxal mindset", and asked people "should they not be punished for this?"

This was the second election rally addressed by the prime minister in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday and the third in a week. He addressed another rally in Srinagar earlier in the day. On September 14, Modi addressed a rally in Doda district.

Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections 2024 Live Updates: Cong slams BJP over governance and investment issues in J&K ahead of elections

The Congress party criticized the BJP as Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Jammu and Kashmir for rallies on Thursday.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh raised three key questions regarding the central government's recent actions.

First, he questioned why the Union Government is infringing on the political executive's powers in Jammu and Kashmir. He pointed out that amendments made by the Home Ministry in July 2024 under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act granted the Lieutenant Governor, appointed by the Union Government, significant authority over policing and administrative matters, which he argued undermines the future J&K government's functionality.

Ramesh further challenged the government's sincerity in restoring statehood to J&K while continuing to limit its powers. He noted that despite claims of popularity for the BJP's actions following the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, the party has avoided engaging in elections in the Kashmir Valley and has faced rejection from the local populace.

Lastly, he questioned the government's failure to attract investment in J&K, particularly in lithium mining, despite the discovery of substantial reserves. He attributed the lack of investor interest not to financial disinterest but to ongoing security issues, highlighting recent terrorist attacks in the region.

Despite ‘left in cold by all’, Kashmiri Pandits make a beeline to vote in J&K Phase 1 polls

Despite none of the six candidates from the Pahalgam Assembly seat seeking his vote, 61-year-old ex-serviceman Triloki Nath Bhat turned up in the scorching heat on Wednesday at a special polling booth for the Kashmiri Pandit migrants in Jagti Township on the outskirts of Jammu on Wednesday to cast his vote.

“I do not have any expectations from any government. No one has thought about us for the past 35 years. The party which forms the government after these polls will also do nothing for us and will try to reap political benefits from the plight of migrant Kashmiri Pandits,” he said.

Bhat said none of the candidates visited Jagti Township – the largest settlement of over 4,200 houses built for Kashmiri Pandits in Jammu – adding that they might have thought that the community does not influence the outcome of the polls. “We get water once in four-five days and the quality of drinking water is so bad that one cannot even have a bath with it,” he rued.

As J&K heads to polling booths, where does Article 370 stand for parties

The mainstay in the political discourse of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh since August 5, 2019, has been the abrogation of Article 370, the legal challenges surrounding it, the reorganisation of the erstwhile state into two Union Territories and the aftermath of the Centre’s move.

While national parties have stayed clear of addressing the issue in their manifestos, most regional mainstream parties have built their campaign for the ongoing Assembly polls around it.

In Valley seats, Sikh faces flag ‘govt raw deal’, pitch for jobs, Punjabi recognition

Maintaining that it has been “ignored by successive governments”, the minority Sikh community in Jammu and Kashmir has fielded its own candidates in a few constituencies in the Valley to ensure “representation of the community” in the current J&K Assembly elections.

Five Sikh faces are in the fray in three Assembly constituencies out of the Valley’s 47. They include three candidates in the Tral seat in South Kashmir, one in Baramulla in North Kashmir, and one in Shalteng in Srinagar.

While the candidates of both the Congress party and Engineer Rashid’s Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) in Tral are from the Sikh community, the All Parties Sikh Coordination Committee (APSCC) – an umbrella organisation of J&K’s Sikh bodies – has also fielded a Sikh nominee in the seat.
