Firozpur Lok Sabha Constituency: One of the 13 Lok Sabha Constituencies of Punjab, Firozpur Lok Sabha constituency was established in 1952. It is comprised of nine Vidhan Sabha Constituencies, including Firozpur City, Firozpur Rural, Guru Har Sahai, Jalalabad, Fazilka, Abohar, Balluana, Malout and Muktsar. Firozpur Lok Sabha constituency, ever since the very beginning, has been a stronghold of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), who have won 11 of the 18 Lok Sabha elections on this seat (Including one by-poll), including the six back-to-back wins from 1998 to 2019. Congress and BSP have also tasted victory in Firozpur on a few occasions over the years.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Firozpur Lok Sabha constituency polling booths will open on Saturday, June 1, in the final phase 7 of the 18th General Elections. After the sitting MP from the seat, Sukhbir Singh Badal announced that he would not be contesting elections in 2024, SAD has announced Nardev Singh Bobby Mann as their candidate, while AAP and Congress, who opted to contest the election separately in Punjab, have announced Jagdeep Singh Brar and Sher Singh Ghubaya, as their candidates, respectively. BJP, who is going alone in Punjab after the coalition talks with SAD fell through, has given the ticket to Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi.
Shiromani Akali Dal, who has the task of saving their winning streak of six consecutive Lok Sabha elections from Firozpur Lok Sabha Constituency, has fielded a fresh face in Nardev Singh Bobby Mann, as their Lok Sabha candidate after their sitting MP Sukhbir Singh Badal decided not to contest the 2024 elections. Nardev is the son of three former Firozpur Zora Singh Mann’s former MPs; his brother has also been active in politics for a long time. However, the 2024 General Election will be Nardev’s first-ever attempt at mainstream politics.
One of the fastest-growing parties in the nation is the Aam Aadmi Party, which also has the government in the Vidhan Sabha of Punjab, decided to contest the Lok Sabha elections in Punjab alone despite being an integral part of the I.N.D.I.A alliance, has announced their sitting MP from Muktsar as their Lok Sabha candidate from the Firozpur Lok Sabha constituency. Brar won the state assembly polls from Muktsar twice in 2017 and 2022 before being announced as AAP’s Lok Sabha candidate from the Firozpur seat.
Out of all the candidates in 2024, Congress’ candidate Sher Singh Ghubaya is the most expressed candidate as he has won the Lok Sabha elections from Firozpur Lok Sabha seat, twice in 2009 and 2014, on SAD’s tickets. In 2019, he left SAD to join Congress and contested the 2019 Lok Sabha election on INC’s ticket but lost the election to the then SAD contestant Sukhbir Singh Badal. This will be Ghubaya’s second time contesting the Lok Sabha elections on INC’s ticket.
Bharatiya Janata Party, after their talks of coalition with SAD did not succeed, decided to contest the Lok Sabha elections in Punjab on their own, and as their candidate from Firozpur Lok Sabha seat announced the name of former Congress MLA from Guru Har Sahai, Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi. Rana was an integral part of Captain Amrinder Singh’s government. However, in 2021, he left Congress amidst the internal chaos in the Congress party and joined BJP.
