The Election Commission on Tuesday told the Andhra Pradesh government that theModel Code of Conduct was applicable to private advisers in the same manner as it is to ministers.
In its letter to the chief secretary, the EC said that violation of its instructions would be viewed seriously and action would be taken under the MCC and relevant laws.
The warning was issued after the EC received complaints that private advisers had been participating in political campaigns and organising press conferences to criticise Opposition parties, an EC official said, on condition of anonymity.
All 40 advisers to the Andhra Pradesh government have been appointed at the rank of Cabinet Minister through executive orders, and almost all of them are drawing pay and allowances from the state’s consolidated fund, the official said.
