As the battle for the Baramati Lok Sabha seat intensified within the Pawar family, the traditional rivals of NCP and the Pawars have gained prominence in the tough fight and found an opportunity to settle their past scores, mainly with the Ajit Pawar-led NCP.
The most keenly watched contest is going to be between sitting MP Supriya Sule, daughter of veteran leader Sharad Pawar, and Mahayuti candidate Sunetra Pawar, wife of Ajit Pawar, in the Pawar family bastion of Baramati.
The polling will take place on May 7, while the counting of votes will be done simultaneously across the country on June 4. The Baramati Lok Sabha constituency includes six assembly segments — Baramati town, Indapur, Daund, Purandar, Bhor and Khadakwasla.
In the state assembly, Baramati town is represented by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar while his associate, NCP leader Datta Bharane, represents Indapur. Bharane won the seat after he defeated Harshvardhan Patil of BJP in 2019. The Purandar assembly seat was won by Sanjay Jagtap of the Congress after he defeated Shiv Sena’s Vijay Shivtare while Bhor is represented by Sangram Thopte, whose father had a political rivalry with NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar. The Daund assembly is represented by Rahul Kul, whose wife was a BJP candidate in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Khadakwasla is represented by Bhimrao Tapkir of the BJP.
Supriya Sule, NCP (Sharad Pawar)
Supriya’s name was also announced by the NCP (SP) – a confirmation of Sharad Pawar’s announcement at a rally in Baramati last week that she would be the party candidate from the Lok Sabha seat.
Sule, who herself has started campaigning, has restrained herself from running down Sunetra Pawar, except once when she said she doesn’t need her husband to deliver speeches. Sunetra Pawar on her part too has so far not attacked Sule.
Sharad Pawar first won from Baramati in 1984. In 1991, Ajit Pawar, his nephew and protégé, won back the constituency and later vacated it to accommodate his uncle. Since 1996, Baramati has been represented first by Sharad Pawar and then Supriya.
Sunetra Pawar, NCP
After maintaining suspense over the candidature of Sunetra Pawar from Baramati Lok Sabha, the Ajit Pawar-led NCP finally announced her name. She will take on Supriya Sule, who will be contesting for the fourth time. Her name was also officially announced by the Sharad Pawar-led NCP.
”After discussions with our alliance partners, we have decided to field Sunetra Pawar from Baramati Lok Sabha seat,” said Sunil Tatkare, president of NCP’s State unit at a press conference in Mumbai.
Reacting to her nomination, Sunetra Pawar said, ”It is a lucky day for me…I want to thank the Prime Minister, Union Home Minister, Chief Minister and Deputy Chiefs besides other alliance partners for nominating me from Baramati Lok Sabha seat.”
Sunetra, who has been campaigning for quite sometime now, said the election of Baramati is in the hands of the voters. ”The voters will decide who will win,” Sunetra Pawar told a Marathi news channel.
