The US Senate on Sunday took a step forward to end the government shutdown — the longest in America’s congressional history — by passing the spending bill brought by the Republicans.

Eight Democrats supported the legislation that led to a 60-40 vote in favour of the bill. However, there has been no guarantee provided by the Republicans to extend the healthcare subsidies, which has angered many in the Democratic caucus who say Americans want them to continue the fight.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of New York voted against the bill. The Senators, however, advanced the procedural vote to fund the government until January 30, which includes a package of three full-year appropriations bills. The bill will now proceed to the House of Representatives for passage and then to President Donald Trump for his assent.

Here’s what all are included in the bill

  1. 01

Bill includes reversal of mass firings of federal workers

The spending bill passed by the US Senate on Sunday includes a reversal of mass firings carried out by the Trump administration against the federal workers since the shutdown began on October 1 and the bill would also ensure that the federal workers receive back their pay, AP reported.

  2. 02

Voting on Affordable Care Act in December

The major hurdle between Republicans and the Democrats has been the Affordable Care Act, which is the health subsidy that helps lower-income groups of Americans pay for private health insurance and its tax credits are due to expire by the end of this year. The Democrats have demanded from the past six weeks that the subsidies be extended.

In the spending bill passed on Sunday, however, the Republicans didn’t provide any guarantee the health care subsidies will be extended but the GOP have said that they would hold a vote in December.

  3. 03

All federal employees to get back their pay

The bill would ensure that all federal employees, including members of the military, Border Patrol agents, and air-traffic controllers receive back their pay as the Trump administration blocked their payments since the government shutdown began.

  4. 04

Agreement includes bipartisan bills to fund government

The agreement passed by the Senate includes bipartisan bills worked out by the Senate Appropriations Committee to fund parts of government. It includes funding food aid, veterans programs and the legislative branch, among others.
