US Government Shutdown Status Live Updates: After the Senate approved the funding bill by a 60-40 vote in favour of the resolution, the lower chamber of the US Congress voted on the measure today to end the longest running government shutdown in US history. President Donald Trump signed the legislation at the Oval Office in White House and formally ended the 43 days long shutdown. The House voted 222-209 in favour of the stopgap funding bill. It’s been 43 days since the shutdown began and hundreds of thousands of federal workers have been working without pay, furloughed and even laid off by the federal administration. The White House had earlier said that President Trump is ready to sign the bill after the House of Representatives passes it.

US Senate approved the bill: After a stalemate of over 40 days, the US Senate on Monday passed the government’s spending bill with the help of eight Democrats, who voted across the aisle and in favour of the GOP backed bill. The Republicans needed 60 votes for the bill to clear the Senate but their numbers stood at 52. However, eight Democratic leaders switched away from the party line which eventually angered several leaders in their caucus. The bill cleared the Senate, paving the way to end the federal shutdown.

Shutdown impact: The government shutdown has affected thousands of federal workers, some of whom have been working for the past six weeks without getting paid, while most of them have been fired and even furloughed. The shortage of air traffic controllers has led the FAA to reduce flights at 40 major airports, leading to a daily cancellation and delays of thousands of flights, which has affected millions of passengers across the country.

US Government Shutdown Live Updates: Economic cost and other key measures in the bill

BBC reported that while essential services like law enforcement, Social Security and Medicare continued, the economic impact was significant. Analysts estimated that the shutdown reduced US economic growth by about 0.1 to 0.2 percentage points each week, roughly $15 billion weekly. Federal contractors, unlike government employees, will not receive back pay, leaving many small businesses struggling to recover.

The new spending bill includes several other measures, such as banning unauthorised increases in Pentagon spending and allocating $88 million to improve security for Congress and federal courts. It also protects senators’ phone records from being searched without notice and restricts the sale of intoxicating hemp-based products such as Delta-8, while allowing non-intoxicating CBD products to remain legal.

US Government Shutdown Live Updates: Why did the government shut down?

The shutdown began after Congress failed to pass a new spending plan before the start of the fiscal year. While the House approved temporary funding, the Senate blocked it over disagreements about healthcare. According to BBC, Republicans hold majorities in both chambers but did not have the 60 votes needed to overcome a Senate filibuster, giving Democrats leverage to demand the inclusion of expiring tax credits under the Affordable Care Act.

As talks broke down, about 1.4 million federal workers were either furloughed or forced to work without pay. Airports across the country reported delays as unpaid air-traffic controllers called in sick, and airlines were told to cut operations at 40 airports. More than 42 million Americans relying on SNAP food-aid benefits also faced partial payments after the Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to withhold some funding during the shutdown.

US Government Shutdown Live Updates: When will the health care debate happen

It’s unclear whether the parties will find any common ground on health care before the December vote in the Senate. Johnson has said he will not commit to bringing it up in his chamber.

Some Republicans have said they are open to extending the COVID-19 pandemic-era tax credits as premiums will soar for millions of people, but they also want new limits on who can receive the subsidies. Some argue that the tax dollars for the plans should be routed through individuals rather than go directly to insurance companies.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, said Monday that she was supportive of extending the tax credits with changes, such as new income caps. Some Democrats have signaled they could be open to that idea.
