US President Donald Trump on Monday called on Israeli President Isaac Herzog to pardon Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is facing corruption charges, during a speech at the Israeli parliament in Jerusalem.

“Hey, I have an idea. Mr. President, why don’t you give him a pardon? Cigars and some champagne who the hell cares?” Trump said, referring to the allegations against Netanyahu. His remarks were reported by Reuters.

Corruption allegations against Netanyahu

Netanyahu, who denies all wrongdoing, was charged in 2019 with fraud, bribery and breach of trust in three separate cases. One of the cases involves receiving about 700,000 shekels (around $210,000) in gifts, including cigars and champagne, from wealthy businessmen.

Can Netanyahu be pardoned?

Although Israel’s president mainly serves a ceremonial role, the office does have the authority to grant pardons in special circumstances. Netanyahu’s trial, which began in 2020, has faced multiple delays due to political crises and recent conflicts. No verdict has yet been reached.

Trump, had earlier this year called for the case to be dismissed altogether. Netanyahu, for his part, has described the proceedings as a politically motivated attempt by his opponents to remove him from power.
