The company also argues Trump should have had a chance to exert executive privilege. If not reined in, the government could use similar tactics to invade other privileged communications, their lawyers argued. (AP photo)Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he would establish a government efficiency commission, led by billionaire Elon Musk, if he wins the November 5 election. The former president made the statement during a speech outlining his economic vision at the New York Economic Club.
Trump revealed that the idea for the commission, which aims to combat “fraud and improper payments,” has been under discussion with his team for weeks. Thursday marked the first time he publicly endorsed the plan and confirmed Musk’s involvement. The commission would be tasked with conducting a full financial audit of the federal government and presenting recommendations for reform within six months.
“I will create a government efficiency commission to audit the entire federal government and propose drastic reforms,” Trump said.

Musk, a vocal supporter of Trump, expressed his willingness to lead the commission, stating on X, “No pay, no title, no recognition is needed. I look forward to serving America if the opportunity arises.”
During his speech, Trump also acknowledged several business leaders in attendance, including JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon and Blackstone Group CEO Stephen Schwarzman. The event drew prominent figures like Howard Lutnick, CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, who co-chairs Trump’s transition team.
Trump criticized Democratic nominee Kamala Harris for rising living costs during President Joe Biden’s term, noting that while inflation has slowed, many Americans are still struggling with high prices for food, gas, and other essentials. Public opinion polls show Trump is seen as a more competent manager of the economy, though his edge over Harris has narrowed recently.
