After over nine months, NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore successfully undocked from the International Space Station Tuesday to begin their 17-hour journey back to Earth.
The four-person crew on board the SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft NASA is now prepping up for splashdown off the coast of Florida early Wednesday, 3.57 am IST.

After a 17-hour trip, The astronauts will return aboard the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, with a splashdown scheduled for 5:57 PM EST on Tuesday in Florida (3.27 AM IST on Wednesday).
“They’re on their way! #Crew9 undocked from the @Space_Station at 1:05am ET (0505 UTC). Reentry and splashdown coverage begins on X, YouTube, and NASA+ at 4:45pm ET (2145 UTC) this evening,” NASA wrote in a post on X after the successful undocking
NASA had initially planned their return for Wednesday but moved it up due to unfavorable weather conditions later in the week.
NASA will provide live coverage of the event. The coverage is expected to start at 10:45 PM EST on Monday (8.15 AM IST on Tuesday) beginning with hatch closure preparations.
Live coverage of their return will be available across multiple platforms, including Nasa TV, Nasa+, and the agency’s official YouTube channel.
Space enthusiasts can also track the real-time developments on NASA’s official website and X account.
Soon after the undocking, the NASA website read: “Following the conclusion of hatch closing and undocking from the International Space Station, coverage will become audio-only. Full coverage resumes at 4:45 p.m.”
After 286 days in space, Williams and Wimore will be flown to their crew quarters at the space agency’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, United States. They will undergo several days of health checks, as per routine for astronaut returns. They will be allowed to go home after NASA flight surgeons’ approval.
