PM Modi congratulates Navin Ramgoolam on ‘historic win’ in Mauritius elections

On Monday, the incumbent Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth conceded defeat in the parliamentary elections and said that his political alliance was headed for a major loss in the polls.

After registering a historic victory in the general election of Mauritius, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Dr Navin Ramgoolam who is all set to become the new prime minister of Mauritius.

In a social media post, PM Modi wished Ramgoolam success and said that he is looking forward to working with him to further strengthen their “unique partnership”.

In a post on X, PM Modi wrote “Had a warm conversation with my friend Dr Navin Ramgoolam, congratulating him on his historic electoral victory. I wished him great success in leading Mauritius and extended an invitation to visit India. Look forward to working closely together to strengthen our special and unique partnership.”

The parliamentary elections were held in Mauritius on Sunday when the polls opened in the country at 7am (03:00 GMT) and closed at 6pm (14:00 GMT) and people cast their ballots in the 12th election since the country attained independence from the United Kingdom in 1968.

On Monday, the incumbent Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth conceded defeat in the parliamentary elections and said that his political alliance was headed for a major loss in the polls.

“L’Alliance Lepep is heading towards a huge defeat. I have tried to do what I can for the country and the population. The population has decided to choose another team. I wish good luck to the country,” Jugnath said, according to Al Jazeera.

Dr Navin Ramgoolam, who is the son of Mauritius’ first Prime Minister Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, has been the PM of the country between 1995 and 2000 and from 2005 to 2014.

Voters voted to choose legislators for the 62 seats in parliament for the next five years, from a list of 68 parties and five political alliances. And India has had a close and long standing relations with Mauritius, which has been anchored in history, demography and culture.
