The Embraer 190 aircraft, operated by Azerbaijan Airlines, was on a flight from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Grozny, Russia, when it went down during an emergency landing attempt. According to authorities, the crash involved 67 passengers and five crew members.
The Embraer 190 was forced to make an emergency landing approximately 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) from Aktau, a city in western Kazakhstan. Disturbing video footage shared online shows the plane erupting into flames upon impact, sending thick black smoke billowing into the air. Emergency responders were quick to extinguish the fire and rushed survivors to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.
The ill-fated flight, identified as J2-8243, originated in Baku and was bound for Grozny, the capital of Russia’s Chechnya region. Due to dense fog at Grozny’s airport, the aircraft had to reroute to Aktau. Tragically, the journey ended in disaster during the emergency landing.
Authorities in Kazakhstan have launched a comprehensive investigation into the crash, examining possible causes such as technical malfunctions and other contributing factors. Russia’s Interfax news agency confirmed that investigators are exploring several theories to determine what led to the tragedy.
