A moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.5 struck Pakistan early on Saturday at 01:59 IST (Indian Standard Time), the National Center for Seismology reported. The tremor occurred at a depth of 10 km below the Earth’s surface. In an X post, the National Center for Seismology said: "EQ of M: 4.5, On: 04/10/2025 01:59:40 IST, Lat: 28.30 N, Long: 65.25 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Pakistan.” Earlier this week, Karachi also experienced a mild tremor. On Wednesday morning, a 3.2-magnitude earthquake struck the metropolitan city at 9:34 am local time, reported Dawn. The epicentre was recorded seven kilometres northwest of Malir at a depth of 10 km. Karachi has seen a series of low-intensity earthquakes this year. In June, several tremors ranging from 1.5 to 3.8 magnitude were recorded, mostly near Malir, between June 1 and June 22, according to Dawn. Experts attribute these tremors to long-dormant fault lines in areas such as Landhi, Quaidabad, Gadap, and Malir, which have begun releasing accumulated tectonic energy. Karachi’s location near multiple seismic faults, including the Allahbund fault along Sindh’s coast, and at the junction of the Indian, Arabian, and Eurasian plates, makes it prone to earthquakes. Experts have repeatedly warned, according to Dawn, that a strong seismic event could endanger thousands of lives and damage critical infrastructure.
