A lawmaker from Nepali Congress, Sunil Sharma, was arrested here on Thursday over charges of possessing a fake academic certificate and pursuing higher studies based on it.

Sharma, a member of the House of Representatives from Nepal’s ruling party, has been accused of buying a higher secondary academic degree from Bihar, and using it to pursue higher studies in China.

The arrest of Sharma, who is considered close to the Shekhar Koirala camp in the Nepali Congress, has created ripples in Nepal’s ruling coalition.
Last week, the lawmaker from Morang-3 constituency, who also owns a few medical colleges and private hospitals, demanded the resignation of the Home Minister and the Finance Minister over smuggling 100 kg of gold, which was seized in a raid in July.

Questioning the arrest carried out by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), Ranesh Lekhak, the chief whip of Nepali Congress, said, “We are waiting to hear from the CIB and the Speaker about what led to his arrest when the parliament session was on, and whether the speaker had been informed earlier.”

In response to the resignation demand, Finance Minister Prakash Sharan Mahat had said that Sharma was angry with the government for turning down the insurance cover request to patients getting treatment in his private hospital.
