A 24 year old man has been arrested in Illinois for allegedly punching an election judge at a polling location, just days ahead of the final showdown of the US presidential election.
The man, who was identified as Daniel Schmidt, was charged with two counts of aggravated battery to a victim over 60 (Class 3 Felony), two counts of aggravated battery in a public place (Class 3 Felony), and five misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest and one misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct.
This case of violence during the early voting and election procedure adds to the growing list of attacks on the voting process and threats of violence, in order to create an atmosphere of distrust and fear toward the electoral system.
Meanwhile, the election officials in the United States have clearly said that the entire electoral procedure is safe and people must cast their ballot in Tuesday’s presidential race for the White House.
In Daniel’s case, the police said that officers were dispatched to the Orland Park Township Office after they received reports of a man causing a disturbance in the voting line. An election judge at the venue instructed Daniel to follow the queue and get back in line as he walked past numerous other voters waiting in line to enter the voting area.
But Daniel ignored the instructions and then another election judge was called to assist, police said and Daniel was again instructed to go to the back of the line. But Daniel attempted to push past that election judge and was prevented from entering by that judge and several other employees.
Daniel then punched an election judge and was later arrested by the police. He was held overnight and transported to Bridgeview Courthouse for a detention hearing.
Violence during the presidential election reminds of the horror of US Capitol riots that took place on January 6, 2021 when a mob infiltrated the US Capitol building. Also, in the current presidential bid, former President Donald Trump survived two assassination attempt this year.
