Harris emphasised the US's role as an 'active participant' in advocating for peace. (AP photo)US Vice President Kamala Harris responded Sunday to former President Donald Trump’s recent meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stating she was “not concerned” that the talks would undermine current US government efforts regarding the ongoing Middle East conflict.
As Harris and Trump gear up for the Nov. 5 presidential election, the US continues to navigate complex dynamics in the region, with bipartisan calls for supporting Israel while encouraging peace and stability.
Harris emphasised the US’ role as an “active participant” in advocating for peace, citing key objectives: ending the conflict, securing the release of hostages, and advancing long-term solutions such as a two-state framework in Gaza.
These remarks come amid intensified violence following the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas, which led to a deadly Israeli military response in Gaza and military actions against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Since the attack, around 1,200 Israelis have been killed, while the Gaza Health Ministry reports around 43,000 Palestinian casualties and a severe displacement crisis. President Joe Biden, alongside Harris, has reaffirmed US support for Israel, while facing calls for a balanced approach to humanitarian concerns in the region.
Netanyahu and Trump have maintained a close relationship, one strengthened by Trump’s policies during his presidency, including relocating the US embassy to Jerusalem. The issue of US foreign policy in the Middle East remains central to both Harris’s and Trump’s campaigns as the election approaches.
