A plan by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to assassinate Israel’s ambassador to Mexico was stopped before it could be carried out, a US official told Reuters on Friday.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the plot against Ambassador Einat Kranz Neiger began late last year and continued through the first half of 2025.

“The plot was contained and does not pose a current threat,” the official told Reuters. “This is just the latest in a long history of Iran’s global targeting of diplomats, journalists, dissidents, and anyone who disagrees with them something that should concern every country where there is an Iranian presence.”

The official did not share details on how the plan was discovered or stopped.

Iran’s mission to the United Nations in New York declined to comment, according to Reuters.

The United States and its allies have repeatedly accused Iran and its proxies of trying to carry out violent attacks against Tehran’s opponents abroad.

Security services in Britain and Sweden warned last year that Iran had used criminal groups to carry out such operations. The UK government said it had disrupted 20 Iran-linked plots since 2022.

Several other countries have also condemned what they described as a rise in assassination and kidnapping attempts linked to Iranian intelligence networks.

Britain’s domestic intelligence chief, MI5 Director General Ken McCallum, said last month that Iran was “frantically” trying to silence its critics worldwide. He cited incidents in Australia and the Netherlands, where authorities had exposed Iranian involvement in antisemitic plots and a failed assassination attempt.

Israel has long been a target of Iran, particularly since tensions escalated earlier this year after Israeli and US airstrikes hit Iranian nuclear sites in June.
