Amid allegations of rising deaths in West Bengal linked to the fear about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has launched an outreach programme under party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, who has set up teams of party leaders to reach out to the families of those who died allegedly because of “fear and anxiety” linked to the ongoing SIR, a party functionary said on Saturday.
According to a senior party leader the teams will speak to the family members personally and provide all forms of assistance, “The party is providing financial assistance, along with other assistance whenever needed. The local party leaders have been asked to keep in touch with these families on a regular basis.”
Starting Saturday, the teams visited the residences of Pradip Kar Panihati, Kakoli Sarkar of Titagarh, Hasina Begum of Dankuni, Biti Das in Sheoraphuli (Hooghly) and Jahir Mal in Uluberia.
And on Sunday, the teams met the families of Bimal Santra in Jamalpur, Sheikh Sirajuddin in Ramnagar, Sofikul Islam in Bhangar, Tarak Saha in Berhampore, Hafeez S. in Kulpi and Biman Pramanik in Sainthia.
After meeting Sofikul Islam’s family in Bhangar, Trinamool leader Arup Chakrabarty said, “Sofikul left us because of the fear generated by SIR. We are beside them and will not let them feel alone. The BJP and the EC are responsible for these deaths.”
“I heard that Safikul used to be worried that he did not have documents and would tell his wife that with no documents he would be deported to Bangladesh. Previously BJP terrorised people with National Registration of Citizens, now SIR,” he added.

Senior TMC sources said the leadership will decide further action after gathering first‑hand accounts from the families.
