Explosions were heard over the Qatari capital, Doha, on Tuesday amid reports that Iran has launched missiles targeting US air bases in the country, according to Reuters.

Iran’s Tasnim says missile operation called ‘Annunciation of Victory’ launched against US bases in Iraq and Qatar.

The announcement was made on state television as martial music played, with a caption on the screen calling it “a mighty and successful response by the armed forces of Iran to America’s aggression”.

The incident comes shortly after Qatar closed its airspace and both the US and UK embassies issued advisories urging their citizens to “shelter in place” as a precaution.

An Axios reporter, citing an Israeli official, reported that Iran had fired six missiles directed at US military installations in Qatar.

Qatar has condemned Iran’s attack on the Al Udeid air base, said the country’s foreign affairs ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari.

“Qatar reserves the right to respond directly in a manner equivalent with the nature and scale of this brazen aggression, in line with international law,” he said.

He added that “Qatar’s air defenses successfully thwarted the attack and intercepted the Iranian missiles” and there had been no casualties in the attack.

He also said Qatar had warned of the dangers of Israeli escalation in the region and called for “the immediate cessation of all military actions and for a serious return to the negotiating table and dialogue”.

The US-run al Udeid air base in Qatar is the Middle East’s largest US base that houses around 10,000 troops.
