US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said on Tuesday that she has revoked government security clearances of at least 37 current and former intelligence professionals, whom she has accused of “politicizing and manipulating intelligence”. Gabbard said on social media that the action was taken on President Donald Trump’s directions.

An exhaustive list of 37 former national security officials was released by Gabbard on her X account where she said that if someone is entrusted with security clearance, then it’s a “privilege” not a “right”.

The National Intelligence chief has repeatedly alleged weaponisation of the US intelligence community, and on the basis of her claims, the Justice Department last month said it was setting up a strike force to probe the matter.

In the X post, Gabbard said “Those in the Intelligence Community who betray their oath to the Constitution and put their own interests ahead of the interests of the American people have broken the sacred trust they promised to uphold. In doing so, they undermine our national security, the safety and security of the American people and the foundational principles of our democratic republic.”

Trump has accused former President Barack Obama’s administration, without providing any evidence, of linking him to Russia and undermining his 2016 presidential campaign.

Trump’s charges came after Gabbard recently threatened to refer officials from the Obama administration to the Justice Department for prosecution over an intelligence assessment of Russian interference in US elections.

A spokesperson for Obama, however, had denounced the claims made by the Republican president and said, “These bizarre allegations are ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction.”

Though it wasn’t clear if all the 37 individuals whose names were released by Tusli Gabbard’s office, including a former spokesperson for Obama’s National Security Council and Biden’s coordinator for global COVID response, served in the capacity of intelligence professionals.
