Dozens were injured and taken to hospitals after an explosion ripped through a mosque inside a school complex during Friday prayers in Jakarta, Reuters reported.

The blast occurred in the Kelapa Gading area of North Jakarta, prompting emergency services and police to rush to the scene. City police chief Asep Edi Suheri told reporters, as per Reuters, that 54 people had been hospitalised with injuries ranging from minor wounds to severe burns.

Authorities have cordoned off the area and launched an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. Footage aired by local channels KompasTV and MetroTV showed ambulances lined up outside the school and police securing the site. Images from the scene showed the mosque largely intact, with no signs of major structural damage.
