Knife attack kills 8, injures 17 in China’s Wuxi, suspect detained

At least eight people were killed and 17 injured in a stabbing incident Saturday evening at a vocational school in the eastern Chinese city of Wuxi, news agency Reuters reported.

The alleged perpetrator is a 21-year-old student at the institute, according to Reuters. The attack took place at the Wuxi Vocational Institute of Arts and Technology in Yixing, a smaller city within Wuxi, at around 6:30 p.m. local time, the Yixing police said in a statement. The suspect surnamed Xu was detained on site.

Police said Wu had failed his examinations and could not graduate, and that he was dissatisfied about his pay at an internship. He decided to vent his frustrations via the attack, the statement said.

China has been witnessing a rise in attacks at public in a random manner. In October, a man was detained by the authorities after he attacked children’s in a school in Beijing with knife. At least five people were wounded in the incident.

A knife attack killed three people and injured 15 others in a Shanghai supermarket in September. The same month, a Japanese schoolboy died after being stabbed on his way to school in the southern city of Shenzhen.
