Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has acknowledged that his government could have acted faster on changing the immigration program and cited “bad actors” exploiting the system.
In a nearly seven minute video posted on his YouTube channel on Sunday, Trudeau explained the rationale behind a contraction in admission of permanent residents to Canada and changes being made to the foreign workers program.
In the video, Trudeau said “In the last two years, our population has grown really fast, like baby boom, fast and increasingly bad actors like fake colleges and big chain corporations have been exploiting our immigration system for their own interests.”
The Canadian PM further said that post COVID-19, there was a demand to bring in labour. “So, we brought in more workers. It was the right choice. It worked. Our economy grew. Restaurants and stores reopened, businesses kept running, but most importantly, in spite of lots of economists, predictions, we avoided the worst-case scenario – a recession. But some saw that as an opportunity to profit from gaming the system.”
Further talking about colleges and universities, Trudeau said that there are some educational institutes which charge foreign students thousands of dollars more than domestic students.
“Far too many colleges and universities used international students to raise their bottom line. There is fraud and abuse and it needs to end,” said Trudeau.
The new immigration plan of Canada for the year 2025-2027 will witness a contraction of 21% in the number of permanent residents which are bound to be admitted in the country. Even the target for permanent residents has been reduced from 5,00,000 to 3,95,000.
