In a major test for the newly formed Labour government in the UK, for the past few days, the country has been witnessing widespread unrest and violence over a stabbing incident in Southport and now anti-racism activists have said that they came together to unite people and stop the violence.
Several anti-racism counter protest groups have stood up against the recent violent upsurge in the country, one of them is Stand Up to Racism. Jo Cardwell, 51, who is a part of the group said that the scale of the recent attacks is “never seen before”.
According to Reuters, Cardwell further said, “Our society is richer because of multiculturalism, it is richer because of the people who have come here. These are things that should be celebrated and fought for, not things to be feared.”
The riots emerged in the UK due to false news being spread that the suspect who killed three minor girls in Southport, northwest England on July 29 was an Islamist migrant.
Around 25,000 people joined the counter protests in the UK which somehow outnumbered the far right protesters, and it happened with the help of trade unions, religious groups and the labour movement, as reported by the Reuters.
Asad Rehman, who is the chairperson of the anti-racism organisation Newham Monitoring Project, said “Social media has changed some of their (far-right) organising models so we have to be on top of that, where are they organising, who are their organisers and what are they planning.”
