A large explosion took place in central Tel Aviv early Friday morning following a drone strike resulting in the death of one person and injuring at least ten others, according to authorities.

Israel’s military is currently reviewing the incident, which initial investigations suggest was caused by “an aerial target.” The specifics of how the strike evaded Israel’s air defense systems remain unclear, as does Israel’s response to this unprecedented attack.

Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai referred to the attack as a drone strike on social media platform X, though the military has yet to confirm the nature of the attack. Yemen’s Houthis have launched drones and missiles towards Israel throughout the nine-month-long-war. Though until Friday, such attacks have been intercepted either by Israeli or Western allies in the region.

Despite the ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza and clashes with Hezbollah in Lebanon, Israel has so far refrained from directly targeting the Houthis, opting to let its allies manage those threats.

According to AP, the explosion, which occurred at around 3:10 a.m. local time, was heard in surrounding cities, causing minor injuries to at least ten individuals. Tel Aviv District Commander Peretz Amar reported that officers were unable to pinpoint the impact site, indicating the explosion likely happened mid-air. “The force of the explosion caused damage that is not great but is spread over a large area. At the moment we don’t know what the object was,” Amar stated.

Israel’s multi-layered aerial defence system, designed to intercept a wide range of threats from long-range ballistic missiles to drones, has neutralized thousands of projectiles throughout the conflict. However, officials warn that no system is 100% effective, and recent incidents have highlighted struggles, especially against small, hard-to-detect drones.
