Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif, who was widely expected to be the next Prime Minister of Pakistan, on Wednesday nominated his brother Shehbaz Sharif for the post. He also nominated his daughter and party’s senior vice president Maryam Nawaz for the post of Punjab Chief Minister. This will be Maryam’s first stint as the Chief Minister.

This comes after PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif won the NA-130 seat by a huge margin in the recently held Pakistan general elections, securing over 172,000 votes against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed independent candidate Dr Yasmin Rashid who got over 113,000.

Nawaz and three of his family members managed to score victories in their stronghold Lahore. Nawaz’s daughter Maryam Nawaz won from NA-119, securing over 83,000 votes against PTI-backed candidate Farooq Shahzad.

Nawaz’s daughter is married to Muhammad Safdar Awan, a businessman and a politician in the country, and the couple has three children.

Maryam led the PML-N to victory in the 2013 Pakistan elections upon being elected as the president of the party. As an advisor to her father, she had also played a crucial role in his re-election campaign in 2008. She was, then, appointed as the Chairperson of the Punjab Tourism Development Corporation.

Maryam was disqualified from holding public office by the Supreme Court of Pakistan in light of the Panama Papers scandal in 2017. The court had ruled that she had been involved in corruption and money laundering, however, she denied any wrongdoing and maintained that she was innocent.

She is viewed as a strong and charismatic leader in Pakistan who is capable of taking on the challenges faced by the country.
