Who is Sudha Murty, the latest Rajya Sabha nominee?

Sudha Murty has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the President of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Friday.

“Sudha Ji’s contributions to diverse fields including social work, philanthropy and education have been immense and inspiring. Her presence in the Rajya Sabha is a powerful testament to our ‘Nari Shakti’, exemplifying the strength and potential of women in shaping our nation’s destiny. Wishing her a fruitful Parliamentary tenure,” PM Modi said in a post on X.

Who is Sudha Murty?

The 73-year-old Sudha Murty is a popular author, philanthropist and educator in India. She is currently the chairperson of the Infosys Foundation.

Born in 1950 in Shiggaon in north Karnataka’s Haveri district, Sudha was began her career at TELCO (now Tata Motors) as the first female engineer at the auto manufacturing company.

She completed her engineering from the B V Bhoomaraddi College Of Engineering and Technology with a first rank across all branches and received a gold medal from the Institute of Engineers. Later, she obtained a Masters in Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, graduating with distinction. She has also received seven honorary doctorates.

Having studied in a Kannada medium school till 10th standard, Sudha Murty fell in love with the language and went on to establish more than 60,000 libraries in Karnataka.

A prolific writer in English and Kannada, Sudha Murty has 30 books and more than 200 titles to her credit – including novels, non-fiction, children’s books, travelogues, technical books, and memoirs. Her books have been translated into all major Indian languages and have sold over 26 lakh copies around the country. She is also a columnist for English and Kannada dailies.

She has received numerous awards, including the Padma Bhushan in 2023, the Padma Shri in 2006, the R K Narayan Award for Literature, the Attimabbe Award from the government of Karnataka for Excellence in Kannada Literature in 2011, and the Lifetime Achievement by Crossword Book Awards in 2018.

Sudha Murty is married to Infosys co-founder N R Narayana Murty. She has two children — engineer Rohan Murty and fashion designer Akshata Murty, who is married to current UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
