Rain to bring respite from heatwave in Delhi-NCR; IMD predicts thunderstorms, temperature drop

IMD Weather Update: Delhi is likely to get much-needed respite from soaring temperatures on Thursday with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting rain and thunderstorms. The weather department’s ‘yellow’ alert for heatwave conditions was in effect till Wednesday.

In its latest forecast, the IMD predicted that the temperature in the Capital will come down as rain and thunderstorms are expected in the city between April 9 and 11 due to an approaching western disturbance.

This comes after Delhi faced the season’s first heatwave with mercury soaring past 40 degrees Celsius, broaching the mark of highest recorded maximum temperature in the first week of April since 2011.

“Under the influence of Western Disturbance; rainfall along with thunderstorm & lightning, gusty/squally winds likely over Northwest India during 09th-11th April. As a result, prevailing heat wave conditions will decrease significantly from tomorrow, the 10th April,” the IMD forecast read.

Intense heatwave in Delhi

Delhi and nearby cities were gripped by a heatwave for three consecutive days in April, with temperatures soaring past 40 degrees Celsius in many areas. Four weather stations in Delhi recorded heatwave conditions on Wednesday, with the mercury touching 43 degrees Celsius in many areas of the capital.

The minimum temperature in Delhi on Wednesday rose to 25.6 degrees Celsius – the highest for the month in the past three years – as a heatwave gripped the capital for the third straight day. The minimum temperature for the day was 5.6 notches above normal.

Another heatwave spell in North expected next week

The weather department said the ongoing heatwave in northwest India is likely to ease from April 10 under the influence of a Western Disturbance and in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, from April 11. However, IMD scientist and spokesperson Naresh Kumar warned of a fresh heatwave spell from April 14-15 in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.

It is likely that temperature will soar past 40 degrees once again in Delhi NCR after the rainfall subsides.

The IMD reported on Wednesday that at least 26 weather stations across Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh recorded temperature past 43 degrees Celsius amid persisting heatwave conditions in northern India.

While north and central India continues to reel under heatwave conditions, heavy rains are lashing parts of southern and northeastern states. Heavy rainfall warnings have been issued in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.
