Delhi NCR Weather: Dense fog hits flight ops, IMD issue alert for light rainfall today

Delhi NCR Weather IMD Forecast: Delhi Airport authorities issued a passenger advisory stating that low visibility procedures are in progress and there has been no impact on flight operations.

The national capital woke up with a slight relief from dense fog on Monday, however, visibility remained low in parts of Delhi disrupting flight operations.

Cold wave conditions prevail across North India for the fourth consecutive day, with temperature expected to drop marginally over the next couple of days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for short duration light rainfall or drizzle in several pockets across Delhi.

According to the flight tracking website Flightradar24, 160 flights have been disrupted on Monday. 122 departing flights reporting delay and 6 cancellation, and 38 arriving flights were delayed and 3 cancelled. The visibility was 800 metres at the IGI Airport as of 8.30 am. Additionally, Delhi Airport authorities issued a passenger advisory at 7.15 am stating that low visibility procedures are in progress and there has been no impact on flight operations.

Meanwhile, light rainfall is likely to occur at Civil Lines, Kashmiri Gate, Vivek Vihar, Patel Nagar, Red fort, Preet Vihar, Delhi University, Budha Jayanti Park, President House, Rajiv Chowk, ITO, Delhi Cantt, India Gate, Safdarjung, Lodi Road, Vasant Vihar, R K Puram, Defence Colony, Vasant Kunj, Hauz khas, Malviya nagar, Mahrauli, Chhattarpur and Ayanagar. The alert is valid for two hours.

Meanwhile, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport also witnessed 34 flight delays and 1 cancellation on Monday as the air quality continues to remain moderate. Kolkata’s Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport reported 26 flight delays and 2 cancellations.

Flight operations at Srinagar International Airport were also disrupted on Monday due to snowfall in the Kashmir valley, as reported by officials. An Airports Authority of India representative stated, “The snow clearance operation is in progress at the runway. All airlines have pushed their flights after 9:30 am”. The valley experienced a new round of snowfall on Sunday. Additionally, dense fog had already impacted airport operations over the weekend, causing delays, diversions, and cancellations of several flights.

The Met office issued a forecast predicting cold wave conditions in parts of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Telangana and north Karnataka. IMD reported less than 50 metres visibility in 24 hours average on Sunday in isolated pockets of Jammu & Kashmir, Northwest Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar.

Additionally, isolated rainfall with thunderstorms was observed over Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh. Light to moderate rainfall is expected in many areas of the Northeastern states until Wednesday (Jan 8).

A new Western Disturbance is forecasted to affect Northwest India from January 10 to 12, likely bringing light to moderate rainfall and snowfall in the Western Himalayan region, along with light rainfall in the plains of Northwest India during this period.
