It is no secret that menstrual cramps can have an inhibiting effect on those who go through menstruation. Menstrual cramps are caused by the contraction of the uterus, which can lead to pain in the lower abdomen or back. However, rarely any arrangements are made to accommodate or even acknowledge these health limitations.

Now a video that puts the spotlight on period pains is going viral. Earlier this month, content creator Siddhesh Lokare (@sidiously_) shared a video in which he and his friend treated menstruators who are undergoing their periods to a romantic Bollywood song and showered them with flowers and sweets.

A video of this over-the-top gesture has gathered over 6.6 lakh likes. While many people found this gesture sweet others expressed mixed thoughts towards it.

An Instagram user wrote. “Oh menstruation is normal, let’s make it not normal by giving them special treatment.”

Another person wrote, “I am also a woman, and I really appreciate this. But I don’t know why I feel like this is useless. Like we go through this stuff every month and if you really want to raise awareness, educate people. And if you want to bring a smile on someone’s face, there’s no scarcity of people who are sad or something. Girls I am on your team only please don’t hate me for being honest”.

In August last year, the Indian Medical Association set up a period pain simulator facility at the Lulu Mall in Kochi where several people came forward to know what it is like to experience menstrual cramps. The event was held as part of Cup of Life, an initiative by Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden to promote menstrual hygiene and break taboos. The clip shared by Cup of Life’s Instagram handle shows several men crying out loud and struggling to bear the pain induced by the simulator.
