Tennis veteran Rohan Bopanna bid a winning farewell to the Davis Cup as India defeated Morocco 4-1 in its Davis Cup 2023 World Group II tie, held at the Vijayant Khand Mini Stadium in Gomti Nagar, Lucknow, on Sunday.

The 43-year-old teamed up with Yuki Bhambri to beat the Moroccan pair of Elliot Benchetrit and Younes Lalami Laaroussi with the score of 6-2, 6-1 in just over an hour to give India a lead they never let slip thereafter. The tennis veteran was accorded a special announcement onboard an IndiGo flight on his return from Lucknow. The pilot of the IndiGo flight congratulated Bopanna who was seen sitting in the economy class of the flight.

“Today we also have one important guest onboard, Mr Rohan Bopanna. As you all know him, he is a legendary tennis player who finished today with a win over Morocco in the Davis Cup and finished his career on a high. It is a pleasure to have you onboard sir and thank you so much,” the pilot said as the passengers gave him a round of applause. Bopanna also stood on his seat and acknowledged the passengers.

“Thank you to the flight crew for this acknowledgement & flying me from Lucknow,” Bopanna wrote while reposting the video on X.

On the last day of the competition, Bopanna, draped in an Indian flag, marked the moment with a touching move as he laid his India jersey in the centre of the court to raucous applause from the crowd.
