A software developer––who has lived in the United States of America for 12 years and holds nine years of work experience––is facing an unexpected challenge as he prepares to move back to India: finding a job. In a heart-felt Reddit post, the developer shared that he earned a master’s degree from the University of Michigan and despite his impressive track record, he is now struggling to secure employment.

In his Reddit post, the user @Free-Length-683 mentioned that he is currently working as a Full Stack Developer at a US university, specialising in Python, Django, Django REST, JavaScript, Vuejs, and PostgreSQL. His mother developed a disability, and his father, 78, has decided to return to India in May.

In the post, he also shared that despite applying for jobs for six months, he secured only one interview, which he failed to crack. The techie also admitted that his previous roles in academic settings didn’t require him to work with highly scalable applications, which further limits his expertise. “I am looking for some career advice. I HAVE TO COME BACK as I can’t leave my parents by themselves and there is still a 15+ year wait till I get my green card,” he wrote on Reddit.

The post quickly gained attention, with numerous social media users dropping their advice to the techie in the comment section. “It’s a cut throat competition in India with horrible wlb unless you have contacts who can refer you,” a user wrote.

“Don’t lose heart, and avoid desperation at all costs! It is okay to be rejected rather than to land in a toxic place,” another user commented. “You need to upskill, you were in a comfort zone…now it’s time to get out of it and run like crazy bro,” a third user said.
