Mumbai’s Sahil Singh is a living testament to the phrase “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps”. Once a wallet seller in Vasai, he now has a full-fledged career in modelling and over 65,000 followers who rave about his ‘grooming’ videos. But, what makes Singh’s story compelling is the conviction that made him cross the hurdles before he got his breakthrough: modelling for Streax, the Indian haircare brand.

Sahil Singh, 24, still has a long way to go as he aspires to big projects. At 12, he decided to become a model. However, he did not have any generational wealth or stable finances to afford the hustle and bustle of a Mumbaikar wanting to make it in showbiz. He counted on many odd jobs, including that of a Swiggy delivery agent at Burger King, delivering milk and newspapers, and more.

In an interview with indianexpress.com, Singh said, “I used to sell wallets on the streets. It was then that I saw a modelling advertisement and decided to pursue the same. But back then, I had a sense that I wasn’t capable, so I completed my Class 10 and started working as a Swiggy delivery agent to help my parents financially.”

“I then worked in Super Daily where I delivered milk and, once in a while, delivered the newspaper every morning,” he added.

Despite taking multiple jobs, Singh’s hunger for education did not take a back seat. He would attend college after work and continue his research into modelling, making connections, and socialising. “I attended college after my working hours and then spent my day knowing more about modelling,” he said.

It was only in 2019 that Singh realised fashion is his passion in the true sense. “I participated in a fashion show in college, and I was certain this was what I wanted to do. I am good at fashion, and I began my research work, spoke to people, and learned about requirements like height, age, and categories. But I still had to continue working because I had EMIs to pay and support my family,” he said.

Sahil Singh, who is certain that he can give several male models a run for their money, joined Blanckanvas, an agency that helped him bag a modelling job in 2024. However, there is no denying that it takes a village to hit the bullseye.

Singh received several rejections due to his looks and height. “Even with my first modelling job, they only appointed me because I agreed to wear heels,” he said.

Singh understood the importance of visibility on digital media and decided to create grooming videos on Instagram. With the help of his school friend, who never missed a chance to boost his morale, Singh started a ‘Grooming Tips’ series, providing A to Z to several aspiring models.

Singh said he felt the effects of real success when his father learned of his fame on social media. “My father showed me my video and told me that you got famous. I was sceptical about telling him about it because I had no actual job in hand, but he really appreciated it,” he said.
