Satendar (38) ran his business — on and off — in South Delhi’s Tigri Extension for the past four years. About one-and-a-half years back, he resumed after a brief hiatus. He also owned the four-storey building which housed his shop. He Satendar died in the same building, which had been his home for over a decade, after it was engulfed in a fire on Saturday evening.
The massive fire left three men, including Satender, and one woman dead and another injured, police said. The police were informed regarding the blaze at 6:24 pm.
“His life was in that building. He had two shops there. I think the fire broke out on the first floor, due to a short circuit. He made sure his wife and children were out, but could not save his own life,” says Satendar’s brother-in-law Neeraj Gupta.
Gupta said that some of the families living in the building were not present at the time of the incident. Each floor had two two-room sets, and three to four of them were rented out.
“Satender was involved in the transport business as well. He has three children and was the only earning member of the family,” said Gupta.
According to the police, the fire is believed to have originated from a footwear shop on the ground floor of the building. Fire services were alerted, and rescue efforts were initiated by local police and residents before the tenders arrived.
During a search of the premises, the bodies of three men were discovered. While one of them was Satender, another, identified as Anita (40), was one of his tenants. The identities of the others were yet to be ascertained. Anita died during treatment at Safdarjung Hospital.
