As debates continue on social media about moving back to India after years abroad, a woman has written on Reddit that returning to India has been “the best decision of my life”.

In a viral post, she explained that she spent four years abroad, two in Texas and another two in Europe, splitting her time between Amsterdam, Paris, and Munich, before deciding to return. Today, she lives in a tier-3 town in South India, works remotely, and earns a comfortable salary.

The woman detailed both the benefits and drawbacks of moving back, listing nine reasons she believes others should consider it. At the top of her list was, “No racism, not even the subtle kind.” She explained, “I feel genuinely good knowing my kids will go to school where no one will use racist slurs against them. That peace of mind is priceless.”
She wrote that she never experienced direct racism in any of the countries she lived in but did notice subtle forms of discrimination in the US, such as waiters hesitating to serve her or interacting less politely compared to others.

Other advantages she highlighted included instant medical access, quality education, financial benefits, proximity to family, and surprisingly good air quality for her city, which consistently has an AQI around 37. She also praised the overall infrastructure, noting that while it’s not perfect, it works for her lifestyle.

On the downside, she flagged three main concerns: cleanliness and punctuality in public transport, and corruption. She shared, “I needed a new commercial electricity connection for one of my shops. I paid Rs 10,000 to the right person and got it done in a week with VIP treatment. Not ideal, but not disruptive either.”

The post quickly drew reactions from netizens. Some disagreed, with one commenter writing, “I never faced direct racism outside of India. However, I have faced direct racism many times in Bangalore and once in Kerala.” Another reddit user offered a more supportive take: “Glad you see things this way. You are more likely to enjoy your move back than a person who is always comparing their life outside. Just accept you are in India and adjust your mindset… You can’t play chess with a ludo mindset.”

Yet others questioned her views on infrastructure. “Dude you lost me at point 2 lolol,” wrote a user. “I don’t know why members in this sub pretend that the infrastructure is not horrible in India. ‘Not bad’ is good, but saying that infrastructure in India is good would sound spectacularly daft.”
