In a bid to celebrate National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day, an upscale New York restaurant, Serendipity 3, has re-launched their ‘Quintessential Grilled Cheese’ sandwich for a limited period. The sandwich, priced at $214 (approximately Rs 17,500), will be on the menu till April 12. However, one needs to give an advance order of 48 hours to get this over-the-top sandwich.

The sandwich is made with extravagant ingredients like the French Pullman Champagne Bread which is made with Dom Perignon Champagne and buttered with grass-fed white truffle butter.

The cheese used in the sandwich is the rare Caciocavallo Podolico cheese. This cheese is created in southern Italy from the milk of the Podolica cow. In an Instagram post about the sandwich’s relaunch, Serendipity 3 explained the virtues of the Podolica cows and wrote that these cows “graze free-range, feeding on strongly aromatic grasses such as fennel, licorice, juniper, laurel bay and wilder strawberries, infusing the milk with these sweet aromatic perfumes.”

The restaurant further elaborated, “There are only about 25,000 of these special cows and they only lactate during May and June, making this cheese one of the finest and rarest in the world.”

After getting toasted with the rare cheese and being cut into triangles, the sandwich’s edges are gilded in 23k edible gold flakes. It is finally served on a Baccarat crystal plate alongside a Baccarat glass filled with South African Lobster Tomato Bisque. The bisque is served as a dipping sauce and is prepared with crème fraîche and truffle oil, South African Losbet Trails, and San Marzano tomatoes from Italy.
