Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms hit several parts of Mumbai on Wednesday, triggering traffic snarls and flood-like situations. Several residents flocked to social media to share videos of the intensity of showers that had the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issue a red alert for Mumbai and Thane districts.
Sharing a video, an X user showed people walking through knee-deep water in Mumbai’s Bhandup. The user shared that her sister and father have been stuck in different places due to incessant rain.

Another video showed rainwater entering the ground floor of a house in Jagdusha Nagar in Ghatkopar West. The video captured a person with a food takeaway walking through the inundated ground floor towards a wall that fell on a car parked outside the residence.

The heavy rain affected local train services in the central suburb railway. A video captured the railway tracks between Ghatkopar and Vikhroli submerged in water.

Several commuters were left stranded on a local train as the harbour line was shut down beyond Kurla due to waterlogging between Mankhurd and Govandi. A video captured the overcrowded train.

In a video shared by an X handle @Weathermonitors, several two-wheelers can be seen submerged outside a Starbucks outlet in Mumbai. Many commuters waited with their umbrellas and some walked through the waterlogging.

According to IMD, the red alert in Mumbai will remain in place until 8.30 AM on Thursday. Its neighbouring district of Thane will continue to receive heavy rainfall alongside thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds on Thursday. The IMD also issued an orange alert to the districts on Thursday.
