Forest department officials are no strangers to animal rescue missions that require quick thinking and improvisation. A video from Karnataka showing a rescue mission of a leopard that needed such presence of mind is going viral.

On Thursday, Twitter user Sahana Singh (@singhsahana) shared a video that showed a group of officials and locals trying to pull a leopard out of a well. The video shows the cowering big cat refusing to use the rope ladder inside the well. To force the leopard to take the ladder, the rescuers lit up a stick and placed it close to the leopard.

The impending threat of fire prompted the animal to climb the ladder and run back into the jungle. In the video, the people are seen cheering in the background after they watch the leopard get out of the well and escape.

Commenting on the video of this unique rescue, Indian Forest Service officer Sudha Ramen (@SudhaRamenIFS) wrote, “Every rescue operation is unique and has its own complexities that varies with the species of the animal involved, availability of resources, location, infrastructure and many more. Good team & presence of mind works well. Forest staff are experienced in handling such situations.”

Another Indian Forest Service officer Apoorv Dixit (@ApoorvIFS) reshared the video and wrote, “Innovation in the field always come in handy. Kudos to the bravehearts in the field who not only had that presence of mind but very strong heart to pull off something like this. #ifs #forest #mananimalconflict”.
