Karwa Chauth or Karva Chauth is a Hindu festival traditionally celebrated by married women in north India. But thanks to many Bollywood films and Hindi serials, everyone knows about the nitty-gritty of Karwa Chauth. But even if it is not as melodramatic as shown in Karan Johar or Yash Chopra film, there are hundreds of women observing the auspicious day.
The festival falls on the fourth day of the Hindu luni-solar calendar in the Kartik month. It will be observed on October 27 this year. Mostly observed by married women or girls reaching the marriageable age, the females keep a day-long fast and only eat or drink after seeing the moon.
As women prepare for the big day, with mehendi and ‘sola sringar’, devotedly praying and waiting for the moon to appear in the sky, social media too is flooded with greetings and messages about the day. With #KarvaChauth dominating Twitter trends throughout the day, everyone joined in including the police. While they used to pass an important message, others are busy cracking jokes and poking fun. Sample these.
What increases a husband’s life?
1. Picking up kids from school
2. Contributing in the kitchen
3. Learning to make great chai
4. Being attentive and a good listener
5. Doing Diwali cleaning

It is believed that Savitri begged the god of death, Lord Yama, for her husband’s soul, thereby the belief that keeping this taxing fast would protect their husbands from any harm and ensure long life to them.
