Bollywood actor Anupam Kher is very active on Twitter and he makes sure his millions of followers are up-to-date on his opinions on current affairs – from the state of Kashmiri Pandits and his Pakistan visa being denied to the award wapsi issue and even comments from other members of the film fraternity. Time and again, his tweets on sensitive and political issues have gone viral because of the controversy that they stir up.
Here’s a look-back at some of the actor’s most controversial tweets.
1) When he tweeted an old picture and got lambasted: On July 12, 2016, he shared a gruesome picture of butchered Kashmiri Pandits, which many have slammed saying it was inappropriate to having shared such a picture at such sensitive times and also as it features the bodies of little kids. You can see the tweet here.
In fact, here’s him trying to reason why he shared the picture.
For all those who are outraged with a pic I posted yday- Remember brutal killing of innocent people is not supposed to have an expiry date.

2) When he commented on the Aamir-Kiran controversy: In November 2015, when Aamir Khan’s intolerance comment courted controversy, this is what Kher had to say to him in a series of tweets.
Dear @aamir_khan. Did you ask Kiran which country would she like to move out to? Did you tell her that this country has made you AAMIR KHAN.
— Anupam Kher (@AnupamPkher) November 23, 2015
Dear @aamir_khan. Did you tell Kiran that you have lived through more worse times in this country & but you never thought of moving out.
— Anupam Kher (@AnupamPkher) November 23, 2015
Dear @aamir_khan. When did ‘Incredible India’ become ‘Intolerant India’ for you? Only in the last 7-8 months? #AtithiDevoBhavah
— Anupam Kher (@AnupamPkher) November 23, 2015
Dear @aamir_khan Presumed country has become #Intolerant. Wat do u suggest 2 millions of Indians? Leave India? Or wait till regime changes?
— Anupam Kher (@AnupamPkher) November 23, 2015
Dear @aamir_khan. #SatyamevaJayate u talked about evil practices but gave Hope. So even in ‘Intolerant’ times u need 2 spread Hope not Fear.

3) On the Padma Bhushan: Twitterati, as we know, are very clever, sharp and witty. So, when Kher shared how happy he is to have received the Padma Bhushan in 2016, people dug out his tweet from 2010 where he said “There is NO authenticity left” in the awards giving system. Talk about hypocrisy!
AWARDS in our country have become a mockery of our system. There is NO authenticity left in any one of them.B it films, National or now PADMA
— Anupam Kher (@AnupamPkher) January 26, 2010
Happy, Humbled & Honoured to share that i have been awarded The PADMA BHUSHAN by the Govt. of India. Greatest news of my life:) #JaiHind

4) On being denied a visa to Pakistan: In February 2016, he claimed that Pakistan has denied him visa to attend Karachi Literary Festival because he is a Kashmiri Pandit, who may expose “Pak terror nexus”, while other 18 Indians have been given.
Have been informed that Pakistan MoFA has denied permission for my visa to participate in the Karachi Literature festival.
— Anupam Kher (@AnupamPkher) February 2, 2016
Sad to have been denied visa on second time in a year. While around 17 people will participate in the Karachi Literature Festival as guests.
— Anupam Kher (@AnupamPkher) February 2, 2016
Has my visa been denied because I speak about India’s rich tradition of tolerance or I am a Kashmiri Pandit who may expose Pak terror nexus?
— Anupam Kher (@AnupamPkher) February 2, 2016
Well, the High Commission had this to say.
It may be clarified that PHC never received Mr Kher’s visa application. So the question of issuing or denying him visa does not arise.

5) When he took on Shashi Tharoor: This is when Kher and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor got into a Twitter war after Tharoor made a comment on Kher’s statement, “I am scared to be called a Hindu”, and Kher called him a “Congi chamcha”.
Come on Anupam. I say it all the time. I’m a proud Hindu. Just not the Sangh’s kind of Hindu. @AnupamPkher https://t.co/jLgKlYwL96
— Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) January 30, 2016
Come on Shashi. Never thought you will misinterpret my statement like trolls do. And behave like a Congi Chamcha. https://t.co/SOD44ZPYvM
— Anupam Kher (@AnupamPkher) January 30, 2016
. Abuse, @AnupamPkher , is what you use when you run out of arguments. I’m a proud MP of @INCIndia &I don’t resort to insults. #CongiChamcha
— Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) January 30, 2016
6) On the JNU row: This tweet came amid the JNU row. Apparently, all those against the current regime are pests, according to Kher.
???? ??? ????? ??????? ???? ?? ?? ???????, ????? ?????? ??????? ???? ?????? ??? ?? ???? ???? ??????? ?? ???? ??? ?? ????? ??????? ?? ??? ???
— Anupam Kher (@AnupamPkher) February 20, 2016
7) When he couldn’t get the award wapsi trend: Kher was very active when the #AwardWapsi movement took place in India, constantly sharing his views on the issue. At the time, he questioned whether Arundhati Roy was even an Indian citizen and called all the people who returned the award “Award Wapsi Gang”.
This #AwardWapsiGang has not insulted the Govt. but The Jury, The Chairman of the Jury and the audience who watched their films. #Agenda
