The principal of a government high school on the outskirts of Hyderabad has been accused of asking senior students to assault some juniors to “teach a lesson” for allegedly deflating bicycle tyres, leaving one student seriously injured.

According to police, Krishna Kumar, principal of a government school in Kompally, has been booked under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for the incident, which allegedly occurred Monday. The district education department has also ordered an inquiry.

Police said students had been complaining that their bicycle tyres were frequently found deflated. “One teacher sent the victim, a Class 7 student, to check the bicycle stand to see if anyone was up to any mischief. While the boy was at the bicycle stand, another teacher saw him and assumed that he was the one deflating the bicycles, and took him to the principal’s office,” Petbasheerabad Police Station SHO Vijay Vardhan said.

The principal allegedly then called some Class 10 students and asked them to assault the victim and others who had been summoned. “At least 6-7 students hit the victim on the back with sticks. The principal also thrashed him and the other boys. The boy received severe bruises on his back and was in pain,” Inspector Vardhan said, adding that the victim’s mother later filed a police complaint.

District Education Officer I Vijaya Kumari, who is conducting the inquiry, said that apart from the injured boy, at least nine other students were beaten up. “It appears that the principal, who is also the in-charge Mandal Education Officer, wanted to teach the students a lesson, which is very unfortunate,” she said. “The Class 10 students would come out of their extra or special classes and find their tyres deflated or bicycles damaged. The conduct of a few teachers is also under investigation.”

She added that her report would be submitted to the joint director of the state education department.
