The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee, recently drew sharp criticism after a video of a female student dancing on a Bollywood song during a cultural fest came to light, with many terming it “obscene”. Following this, the institution has issued a statement addressing the circulation of “misleading content” on social media.

While the statement did not directly mention the issue, many social media users connected it to a recent controversy sparked by a video of an IIT Roorkee student dancing at a college festival. In a statement posted on the official X account of IIT Roorkee, Media Cell In-charge Sonika Srivastava condemned the spread of false information online. She emphasised that the institute strongly disapproves of such actions.

The statement warned that the institute may initiate legal action against individuals or groups responsible for disseminating defamatory or incorrect information.

“It has come to our notice that misleading content is being circulated on social media with the intent to tarnish the reputation of the Institute. IIT Roorkee strongly disapproves of such actions. The Institute cautions that it reserves the right to initiate FIRs (First Information Reports) and pursue legal proceedings against any individual or group involved in spreading defamatory or false information. IIT Roorkee remains committed to the highest standards of professional ethics, institutional integrity, and academic excellence,” the statement read.

IIT Roorkee’s statement divided social media, with a user saying, “Legal actions without internal investigations might put you in more trouble. If there a propaganda you’re suppose to expose it & prove the transparency, specially for the humanities department.”

Another user commented, “IIT’s media cell post is reaching to lakhs of people and my college’s Placement cell is not able to reach to a good company.”

“Stop fearmongering and start looking inside to clean the rot,” a third user reacted.

However, according to media reports, the video in question is not recent but dates back to 2023 when the dance took place during the institute’s annual cultural festival. Despite being an older clip, it resurfaced this week and quickly went viral on social media, triggering criticism over the nature of the performance and the student’s attire.
