The use of animals for entertainment and fashion has long been criticised by animal rights activists, be it the use of animals during shoots or using fur and leather. Now a dress has once again triggered the debate about animal rights with regards to fashion.

Recently, a fashion and makeup account on Instagram, ‘Make over by Preethi’ (@ohsopretty_makeover), posted a video that showed a dress which was fitted with an enclosure in which the designer put a bunch of tiny fish.

This video soon gathered lakhs of likes, but at the same time, it invited the ire of netizens who argued that such use of fish amounted to animal cruelty. Many people noted that keeping fish in small containers might look aesthetically appealing but it is suffocating for the fish as they need ample space to move around. Some people also highlighted how pet breeders artificially colour fish species like white skirt tetras so that they can appeal to buyers.

Commenting on the video, an Instagram user wrote, “Everyone, Much respect for your talent and creativity. However, You forgot that those are Living sentient beings. You can’t just use Animals/fishes/Sentient beings like that. You are suffocating them. I know it must be unintentional, But kindly stop Doing this as this is cruel, Bad, wrong and Unfair.”

Another person wrote, “They require proper oxygen for living and they do have a life they ain’t something you people can use in sake of fashion like just other objects Kindly stop this 🙏”.

An Instagram user pointed out, “These are minos/ albino skirt Tetra, a freshwater Tetra species but people should stop 🛑 buying them Stop promoting this kind as they are tortured and injected with colourfull dye.”

Interestingly, fashion icon and actor Uorfi Javed seemed impressed with the unique dress and wrote, “Love it”.
