As winter sets in, Delhi and the National Capital Region are once again choking under a blanket of toxic smog. With the Air Quality Index (AQI) hovering in the “severe” zone, many residents have turned to air purifiers in a desperate attempt to breathe cleaner air indoors. While branded purifiers cost a fortune, one ingenious Reddit user has shared a do-it-yourself hack to build a fully functional version at home for under Rs 2,000.
In a viral post titled “I Built my Personal Air Purifier for 2000 INR”, the Redditor explained how they managed to assemble an affordable machine using just a few easily available components. “So I built this air purifier using exhaust fan and HEPA filter, and it is working great, even better than the Philips one I have,” the post reads.
According to the creator, the setup included a 150mm exhaust fan (Rs 750), a HEPA filter from Amazon (Rs 1,000), and some basic materials, a switch, wire, regulator, cardboard, and a glue gun, costing around Rs 150 in total. The Redditor also claimed that the DIY purifier brought down the AQI in a 12×12-foot room from 400 to 50 in just 15 minutes at its lowest speed.

As one city gasps under a thick grey haze, the other enjoys the kind of crisp, clean air that Delhiites can only dream of right now.
