India remains one of the top travel destinations for foreigners, with many documenting their experiences across the country. In recent years, several international YouTubers, including those from Australia and South Korea, have faced criticism for commenting on civic issues, pollution, and women’s safety. A recent video featuring an Australian traveller exploring Mumbai’s Dharavi slum has sparked debate on social media.
Pete Zogoulas stayed in India’s “deadliest” slum for three days. In the viral video, he walks through Dharavi’s narrow lanes and introduces his Indian friend, Ayushi, who joins him for the challenge. The pair enters a local home, greets the residents, and eventually settles on a bed to spend the night.
In the extended YouTube clip, they interact with locals, explore the area, and offer viewers a glimpse of daily life in the slum. Sharing the video on Instagram, Zogoulas wrote: “I Tried Surviving India’s ‘Deadliest Slum’.”

The video quickly drew attention, amassing nearly one lakh views. Reacting to it, a user wrote, “Hey dingus,I’d suggest you explore the other sides of India too. As most of your recent videos have just been placed in Mumbai’s rural areas. As an Indian myself, I do think there is some part of your audience who’s gonna judge the entire country based on that particular area you’ve covered,” a user wrote. “Poor people, poor choice, there are so many good places in India like Ladakh and Taj Mahal, still they are here,” another user commented.
“Nxt time try the most costliest Indian Hotel also and stop getting obsessed with slums. India is not only about that,” a third user reacted. “He might be an agent of Pakistan and trying to show India poor,” a fourth user said.
