WATCH: 12-foot King Cobra spotted in a tree in Karnataka; daring rescue goes viral

The video shows wildlife officials in Agumbe, Karnataka rescue the 12-foot King Cobra from a tree.

Earlier this week, wildlife officials in Agumbe, Karnataka engaged in a dramatic rescue of a 12-foot King Cobra and successfully returned it to the forest. Ajay Giri, the field director at Agumbe Rainforest Research Station (ARRS), captured the thrilling rescue on video and shared it on Instagram.

“A king cobra (~12ft long) was sighted crossing a main road, the snake got disturbed by spectators then took refuge on a bush inside a compound of a house. Owner of the house and neighbours got worried and informed in-charge forest department officials. ARRS was informed about the situation,” Giri wrote in his post.

The gripping footage also gained traction on Instagram.

The saga began when locals spotted the massive snake slithering across a busy road. “Over the call we instructed locals about do’s and don’t’s and rushed to the location. After the inspection we decided to bag the snake. The snake was gently bagged. We conducted onsite awareness program for locals, distributed informative materials. Later the snake was released into the wild in the presence of locals and in-charge forest department officials,” he added.

The video shows Giri and his team taking a rescue bag, fitting a cylindrical pipe-like object into one end, placing it on the ground, and securing it in place with bricks. The snake is then moved from the tree with the help of a stick with a hook and placed near the opening of the bag. The snake slithers into the bag.

The bag was sealed and weighed, following which the King Cobra was promptly released back into its natural habitat.

Reacting to the video, many users shared how they felt the goosebumps on their skin. One user said, “What a gorgeous cobra . Thank you for saving him.” Meanwhile, a second user said, “Kings have the most magnificient look when it comes to snakes world… these creatutes are truly 🔥🔥.. their majestic and dreadfully powerful looks are unmatched…extraordinary handling expertise and rescue!!”

And a third user commented, “OMG this team awesome in handling snakes without scaring them.” A fourth user expressed, “Are there any instances where Kings falling down from Canopy on bikers/cars in Malenadu area? — This king’s relaxed sitting on tree makes me ponder so. (new fear unlocked).”
