An old video showing Susan Caplin––rumoured to be the voice artist behind Amazon’s Alexa AI assistant– saying, “I am Alexa,” to the AI, sparking a comical back-and-forth with the device, has gone viral again.
The video begins with Caplin instructing, “Alexa, play my favourite playlist,” but instead of complying, the assistant can be seen saying, “You sound familiar. Who is this?”
Without missing a beat, Caplin says, “I am Alexa,” to which the virtual assistant fires back, “No, I am Alexa.”
The two then escalate into a playful standoff, both saying, “I said it first!” leaving viewers in stitches.
The video was posted on Instagram by Steve Nouri (@thestevenouri), CEO and Co-Founder GenAI Works, who wrote a long note in the caption. “Susan Caplin, the voice behind Amazon’s Alexa, is a familiar presence in millions of homes. Yet, despite the global recognition of her voice, she leads a low-profile life, far from the limelight,” he wrote.
However, Amazon never officially confirmed if Caplin indeed is the person behind Alexa’s voice.
“Her voice, crafted to be clear, calm, and authoritative, powers Alexa, one of the world’s most recognisable virtual assistants. It helps people check the weather, control smart devices, and get answers to questions—all without anyone knowing much about the person behind it. But while her voice is everywhere, Caplin herself remains largely anonymous, highlighting how technology can transform the ordinary into something extraordinary,” Nouri said in the post.

The text on the video reads, “Susan Caplin, the voice behind Alexa confuses Alexa.”
The video has gone viral with over 33 million views and numerous people commenting on the post.
One user wrote, “When Alexa meet alexa.” Another person commented, “wait so the person who voices Alexa is not named Alexa?”
A third individual wrote, “Its all funny until the machine start to decide that there will be only one Alexa.”
According to a report in The Verge, journalist Brad Stone, in his book Amazon Unbound: Jeff Bezos and the Invention of a Global Empire, claimed that Boulder-based voiceover artist Nina Rolle is the voice behind Amazon Alexa. While this claim sparked curiosity, Amazon neither confirmed nor denied Rolle’s involvement, leaving the mystery unresolved.
