Star Wars fans have gone into a frenzy on “May the fourth today” and memes have flooded social media platforms. Years ago, it all started with the pun on the catchphrase ‘May the Force be with you’ as ‘May the Fourth be with you’. However, it was not the American epic space opera franchise that proclaimed the day, but ardent fans of George Lucas’ films who wanted to pay tribute to the Jedi knights’ iconic line.

Fans have showered their love with posters, favourite scenes, jokes and witty lines on Twitter. #MayThe4thBeWithYou and #StarWarsDay have started trending on Twitter. Here are some of the posts:

Citing Lucasfilm, ABC report said that the mantra was originally flip-flopped in 1978 to greet others on the Fourth of July. After that on May 4, 1979, a London-based newspaper writer appreciated Britain’s then prime minister, Margret Thatcher, on her first day of office using the phrase “May the Fourth be with you”. The writer was quoted as saying in a full-page ad by USA Today, “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations!”

As fans across the globe celebrate the day, Disney+ is premiering Star Wars Visions Volume 2, a collection of short episodes by anime creators and storytellers. Disney+ tweeted, “New adventures await.#StarWarsVisions Volume 2 is streaming tomorrow, only on #DisneyPlus.”
